Perfect Olympians

How has your commitment to Christ rated so far this week? –Your promise to daily follow Him? –Obey His Spirit; and His Word? Remember, 1 John 2:6 says, “Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.”

And how did Jesus walk (live)? He did and said exactly as His Father commanded Him. (John 14:31 & 12:50) Contrary to popular “Christian” opinion, we are to do no less. In Matt. 5:48 Jesus says, “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” That means just what it says, so don’t listen to those who try to water down that command by, “What He really meant was this: …”

1 Peter 1:15 dictates, “But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.” And 1 John 3:9 says, “No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s nature abides in him…”

So, what do you think? Are the commands ordering, “Be perfect, be holy, be sinless,” –or not? Hmmm… I believe there is no denying, for the honest reader of God’s Word, that this is certainly what is being commanded.

So… can this really be achieved? Yes. God does not tell us to do something, and then not give us the means to obey.

Then HOW is it achieved?

It takes training. No, not some expensive, man-centered schooling, but only a commitment to humbly seek God through His Word (Jesus) by the anointing of His Holy Spirit. As 1 John 2:27 tells us, “The anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as His anointing teaches you about all things…” Yes, He can use other sources or people, but since the context here is warning us that there are many who are trying to lead us astray by their teachings, we must be sure that they also have the Holy Spirit as their teacher; not some false spirit.

We need to be very, very careful who we sit under. Once deceived, we no longer realize we are deceived, and our minds will therefore become ever more hardened in falsehood’s mold. Jesus and the apostles repeatedly warned about this. Jesus warned in Luke 6:39,40, “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is FULLY TRAINED will be like his teacher.” It is a terrifying thought when you realize you could be trained by a false, even evil, but cunning teacher! And God’s Word warns us that there are MANY such deceivers!

However, if we are being trained by Christ, (for as Matt. 23:10 says, we “have ONE Teacher, the Christ”), then all we need do is choose that best thing which He said Mary chose. “Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what He said.” (Luke 10:39) That is all that is needed: A commitment to listen to Him, and Him alone.

1 Peter 1:22,23 says, “…you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth” and “have been born again, not of perishable SEED, but of imperishable, through the LIVING and enduring word of God [the written Word, the Word which became flesh, and the Spirit of truth].” Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the Word are all called “the truth” in the Bible, so if we meditate on the Word, the Holy Spirit counsels us, helping us get to know God through Jesus. And the more we listen to Him, the more we will become like Him, thus trained to perfection.

So, for those who complain that they can’t help but sin, I reply, “If you are not doing STEP ONE, then yes, you will have a continuous problem.” STEP ONE, after committing to following Christ, is to read God’s Word.

Many retort, “I am reading it!” Okay… Would Olympic trainees reply, “But I DID exercise! I DID practice!” ?

“Really?” a suspicious Coach would ask. “How long?”

“Oh, about a half an hour a day.”

Right! –Is that the answer any Olympic trainee would give? Absolutely not! If he did, he would be kicked right out of the training process. No coach would tolerate such an attitude. So how could anyone think that once they’ve given their promise, their commitment to walk as a citizen in Christ’s Kingdom, they can lay back like a beach bum and just wait for Paradise?!

It’s all silly, as you can see… If a person is not doing the training necessary to be in the Olympics, then he or she is just not in. The same applies for we who have committed to following and obeying Christ. We have to be immersed in Him and all of God’s Word. As 1 Cor. 9:25-27 says, “Everyone who competes in the games goes into STRICT training… Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly… No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”

So… sinless perfection? Well, how good of an Olympic athlete IS the Olympic athlete? How good IS that Olympic skater? That Olympic gymnast? Well, once they are fully trained, they are ready for the Olympics, and they are GOOD! They have talent! They attempt to perform without a flaw. In other words, with perfection. How do they do that? –By practicing PERFECTION every day, that’s how.

So apply this analogy to your every day life. It’s about: PRACTICING PERFECTION EVERY DAY UNTIL IT DOES BECOME A REALITY.

Again, how do we practice spiritual perfection? By constantly walking in the Spirit. How do we constantly walk in the Spirit? By abiding in Jesus and His words, the Word of God. (John 1:1,14 & Rev. 19:13)

with love,
