The Stench of a Polluted Church

It is certainly a sad time in the history of the church. She is so weak, so diluted, so mesmerized by the world and its philosophies that she skips toward Hell just like the heathen she thinks she is “evangelizing” into Christ’s Kingdom.

Preaching directly from God’s Word concerning the Gospel of the cross, of repentance, and of holy living is just, well, considered too impotent in getting numbers into the church building or in making the leader’s name known. Instead, all sorts of tactics are implemented —
such as food, games, and movie night as a means to enjoy others; studies in the writings of ancient (or not so ancient) Catholic, Hindu, and Buddhist monks or other mystics as a path to “experience God”; sessions in contemplative prayer or soaking in order to empty the mind and “hear from God and let Him love on you”; inspirational and motivational seminars to enable God to increase one’s business, marriage, child-rearing, or influential success; cell groups to continuously rehash reasons for everyone’s sin, (preferably called “issues” and “addictions”), never thinking to actually believe that “knowing the truth –Jesus– sets one free” (John 8:32-36); networking with other churches and city counsels to promote social justice in one’s community and abroad; and the list goes on.

Why are all these types of activities promoted in the name of Christ? Well, because it is much easier to do all that than to preach, especially void of hypocrisy, the whole of God’s Word. And why is that? Because those are the politically correct ways in the eyes of the general public to attempt to advertise one’s religion. Those methods are tolerable, often even admirable. What is not tolerable or admirable to the majority, is strong preaching. —
Especially the preaching of repentance and preaching that the result of true repentance is to then live in absolute purity of thought, word, and daily conduct. Whoa! That’s just too much even for the preachers to swallow! They aren’t going to preach that, much less DO that, nor would they even entertain such a preposterous thought!

In fact, most preachers are the very ones who laugh, and even mock anyone who suggests that maybe we should take seriously Scriptures that command holiness, perfection, and separation from the world. Here’s a few verses I rarely hear them preach:

Matt. 5:48 –“Be perfect, therefore, AS your Heavenly Father is perfect.”

Matt. 5:29 –“If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out…”

1 Peter 1:15 –“Be holy in ALL you do.”

2 Peter 3:14 –“Make every effort to be found spotless, blameless…”

James 4:4 –“You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.”

1 John 3:6,9,10 –“No one who continues to sin has either seen Him or known Him… No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s nature abides in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God… Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God…”

Let’s see… Is it right to watch violence and immorality? Is it right to listen to foul or cruel talk? Is it right to participate in (or watch) “worship” that is sensual, man-exalting, or even frenzied? Is it right to dress provocatively? Is it right to read novels or magazines that include ungodly morals or advice? I could go on, but everyone knows (yes, unfortunately even one’s non-Christian, Hell-
bound, needing-the-Truth neighbor or coworker knows) that almost all so-called Christians (so-called Christ-followers) engage in this worldly junk. But instead of being a true witness for Christ, these lukewarm lovers of self rationalize their behavior by explaining grace and promoting the noble-appearing social-gospel love-unity agenda.

Yes, any love-gospel appeals to society in general –even those who hate God and righteousness. And God IS love. But God is also holy and just, and righteous justice demands punishment for sin. THAT is the part of God’s Word and character that keeps getting left out — over and over; and in this postmodern culture, ever increasingly so.

True preachers and ambassadors of Christ, take a stand! Preach God’s Word! All of it! And stop using the world’s methods to promote the Gospel! Because as we all know, there are already enough hoards who sit in the pew who have never had a transformed heart –have never been reborn. And they’ve made the bride of Christ become so polluted that we are a sickly stench –instead of the beautiful, pure, victorious, abiding in the Vine church that God will accept.
